Senior Softball USA Selects Mesa For World Master Championships
LVSSA/SSUSA Heading to the Desert for Competition Oct. 29 – Nov. 1, 2020
Sept. 24, 2020 – (Mesa, AZ) -Visit Mesa is excited to announce the return of field sports with the LVSSA (Las Vegas Senior Softball Association and SSUSA (Senior Softball USA) World Master’s Championship (WMC). The competition will be held Oct. 29 – Nov. 1 and utilize three Mesa Parks venues including the Red Mountain Softball Complex, Skyline Softball Complex and the newest fields at the Eastmark Sports Complex. Visit Mesa partnered with Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to secure the tournament which will host the Men’s and Women’s 50s category.
While senior softball is not new to the Valley, it is a new sport for Mesa to host. More than 1,500 softball athletes and over 100 teams are expected to compete Halloween weekend on Mesa fields.
“We’ve been patient for the return of competition sports in Mesa,” said Visit Mesa Director of Sports Sales Suzanne Cecil. “The weather is going to be incredible and we have a strong appetite for team sports in our city, especially as we approach the cooler months and are able to enjoy time outdoors.”
The tournament has selected Holiday Inn & Suites Phoenix-Mesa/Chandler as the host hotel and the event will utilize up to three additional Mesa hotels over that weekend. The estimated direct visitor expenditures are expected to be $435,000. Visitors are vital to Mesa’s economy and enhance the quality of life for Mesa’s half-a-million residents. According to Longwoods International, Mesa attracts 4.5 Million visitors a year. In 2019, visitor spending in Mesa was climbing to record levels. The latest data shows that Mesa visitors spent $486 million in both day-trip visits and overnight stays.
“We were very lucky to be able to find an area with enough good fields anytime in October,” said Fran Dowell, SSUSA executive director.
The fourth session of the World Masters Championships, featuring all 50 men’s and women’s divisions, will be in Mesa and Glendale, Ariz.
Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: Men’s 50 Major-Plus, Men’s 50 AA and all Women’s Divisions
Oct. 29 – Nov. 1: Men’s 50 Major and AAA
