Mesa Forward: How America’s First Autism-Certified City is Leading the Way in Accessibility

Explore how Mesa, Arizona, is setting a global example in inclusion, the impact it’s making on visitors and residents, and the innovative initiatives shaping its accessible future.

In 2019, Mesa became the world’s first Autism-Certified City, an achievement that redefined what it means to be an inclusive destination. This initiative, spearheaded by Visit Mesa, went beyond meeting certification requirements; it set a new standard for creating meaningful, accessible experiences for neurodiverse individuals and their families. With strong support from local businesses, city officials, and partners like the Arizona Museum of Natural History (AZMNH), this effort was not just about certification—it was about fostering a culture of belonging and understanding.

This milestone aligns closely with Mesa’s Master Plan, which emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity as foundational elements of its vision for the future. Building on its achievement as the first autism-certified city, Mesa is striving to become one of the most accessible cities in the nation. Through forward-thinking initiatives and strong community partnerships, the city is leading by example, promoting inclusivity not only in tourism but across all aspects of community life.

Rewind to 2018 when Marc Garcia, Visit Mesa’s president, had a transformative experience with his family. Inspired by his son’s needs and the lack of understanding in public spaces, Marc committed to changing the narrative in Mesa.

“So, rewind the clock back to the summer of 2018. I was on a personal vacation in Southern California… I thought, ‘I can’t do anything about this here, but I can do something about this back in Mesa.’” Marc Garcia, President & CEO Visit Mesa

Achieving the autism certification was just the beginning of Mesa’s journey toward inclusivity. Visit Mesa, alongside community partners like the Arizona Museum of Natural History (AZMNH), has embraced this mission by implementing innovative programs and forward-thinking policies.

AZMNH has become a leader in fostering an environment where neurodiverse visitors feel truly welcomed. From sensory-friendly hours that adjust sound and lighting to an autism advisory team guiding programming, their approach goes beyond accommodations—it’s about creating shared experiences that foster a sense of belonging.

“At the museum, inclusion is mission-critical. It’s not enough to accommodate people—we need to be inviting.” Alison Stoltman, Deputy Director Arizona Museum of Natural History (AZMNH)

For families, the certification offers more than just accommodations—it provides a sense of ease and belonging. Visitors often express how Mesa’s commitment to inclusion allows them to plan trips without hesitation, ensuring their experiences are both enjoyable and stress-free. These personal stories highlight the tangible difference the autism certification has made, solidifying Mesa’s reputation as a community that leads with empathy and action.

“We had a volunteer share that they didn’t feel supported in school but found that support at the museum… That experience gave them the confidence to apply to university.” Alison Stoltman, Deputy Director Arizona Museum of Natural History (AZMNH)

Mesa’s commitment to inclusivity continues to evolve with plans to expand accessibility across the city. These forward-looking initiatives include establishing accessibility champions in local businesses, enhancing inclusive dining options to accommodate diverse dietary and cultural needs, and broadening programs for neurodiverse teens into fields like performing arts and music. This vision highlights the city’s drive to make every visitor feel seen, welcomed, and supported.

“Our goal is to have an accessibility champion at every business we work with. When people know better, they do better, and we want that message spread throughout the community.” Alison Brooks, V.P. Marketing & Destination Experience, Visit Mesa
