The Superstition Mountain Cougar Shadow is a unique event that happens twice annually, around the third week of March and September. These dates coincide with the equinox, making the sun’s angle just right to cast the shadow of a crouching cougar on the western face of the Superstition Mountains. The Cougar Shadow typically becomes visible between about 30 minutes before sunset between 5:30 and 6:00pm, Timing is crucial, so plan to be there early to catch this elusive phenomenon.
Best Viewing Locations for the Cougar Shadow
To fully experience the Superstition Mountain Cougar Shadow, consider stopping at one of the best spots near Superstition Boulevard & Goldfield Rd, Apache Junction.
There is a wide shoulder on the east side of Goldfield Rd (opposite the homes) where you can pull off to view the cougar and take pictures.
**Although Lost Dutchman State Park is nearby, you will not be able to see the shadow from inside.
